We do know that there are many common nutritional deficiencies in those people diagnosed with the condition. By correcting theses deficiencies and improving general health we can successfully mange the condition without the use of medications.

Deficiencies associated with ADHD

*     Low levels of Omega 3. Omega 3 is an essential nutrient that maintains the communication between each brain cell.

*     Poor levels of the beneficial gut bacteria.

*     Low levels of Zinc

*     Low levels of Magnesium

*     Inability to process and maintain adequate blood sugar levels

*     Inability to handle stressful situations

*     Poor digestive function

Allergies

An allergy is a sensitivity to a particular substance that is ordinarily harmless to some people but can cause a reaction in others. An allergy indicates that the immune system is trying to fight foreign substances entering the body from the environment - substances such as dust, pollen, chemical cosmetics, metals, animal hair, smoke, perfumes, moulds, and certain foods. Almost any food may pose a threat to anyone at any particular time.

The body's allergic reaction to the allergen may manifest itself as hay fever, asthma, hives, high blood pressure, abnormal fatigue, constipation, stomach ulcers, dizziness, headache, mental disorders, hyperactivity, hypoglycaemia, nausea, cramps, and even shock.

Allergies to food in the diet, as well as inhalants and chemicals, can cause a brain reaction mimicking typical psychological problems including listlessness, insomnia, and irritability to more sever symptoms such as migraine headaches, depression, poor memory, violent outbursts, and hallucinations.

Dietary Advice

Food sensitivities can be discovered using pathology testing or through an elimination diet. Wheat and dairy products are common causes of many problems, also shellfish, corn, strawberries, soybeans, peanuts, and eggs are also known for their negative affects. Substitutes for wheat are oats, buckwheat, barley, millet rice, rye and sorghum. Sensitivity to wheat may indicate that there may also be sensitivity to meat products, canned goods, and bakery products that have had dried milk products added. Patients will need their diet carefully planned

Anxiety

Anxiety, commonly expressed as panic attacks have been linked to nutritional deficiencies or imbalances.

Dietary Advice

A basic healthy diet should be strictly followed while under periods of stress. If the patient is feeling tense or stressed, sugar should be eliminated completely from the diet and high-fibre foods should be increased to prevent swings in the blood sugar levels. Eating small but regular meals can also be of assistance. Caffeinated drinks can also cause anxiety if taken in sufficient quantities - for some people this may only mean one cup of strong tea, a small cup of strong coffee or one energy drink. Food sensitivities can also lead to anxiety and should be considered during treatment.

Appetite Loss

Neurotransmitter chemicals in the hypothalamus section of the brain control the appetite. These chemicals are influenced by the blood levels of sugar, fatty acids and hormones and are also affected by anxiety, depression, long term illness, digestive disorders, fever, cancer and a deficiency in thiamine, or pantothenic acid, or zinc. You will need to address underlying cause of the appetite first.

Dietary Advice

Try to eat frequent, small meals  that are usually favourites. A basic healthy diet should be followed far as possible. The junk food margin should be low as these foods contribute to a poor nutrient  intake. You should check that intake of enough foods containing vitamins, thiamine, pantothenic acid, zinc is sufficient. Herbs that stimulate the appetite should also be included in the die

 Asthma

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterised by difficulty in breathing, frequent coughing, and a feeling of suffocation. An asthma attack is often precipitated by physical or emotional stress, respiratory infections, air pollution, changes in temperature or humidity, and exposure to fumes such as those of petrol or paint, as well as dietary sulfur dioxide and sulphites. It may also be related to low blood sugar, disorders of the adrenal glands or specific allergies.

Skin tests are often given to pinpoint the patient's allergic tendencies. Common problem areas are pollen, animal hair, dust and certain foods. Good nutrition is necessary and the asthmatic patient should eliminate those foods from the diet that can bring on an attack.

Meat, eggs, and dairy products are all considered possible allergens. Nuts, chocolate, cola, milk and MSG are also triggers. Allergens such as dust mites in carpets, roaches, cats and dogs can all bring on an attack. Exercise, viral infections, and sinusitis are also considered triggers.

Dietary Advice

Nutrients may be helpful in the prevention of attacks. Vitamin A is necessary for general health of the lungs, as is vitamin E which can guard against visible and invisible air pollutants. The patient should also have a diet with sufficient amounts of B group vitamins to avoid symptoms of stress which may trigger an attack. Vitamin B6 helps prevent and treat asthmatic symptoms and B12 is good for the overall treatment of respiratory allergies. Vitamin C is needed for stress and exposure to hot or cold weather, cigarette smoking, and industrial pollution.

Behaviour & Learning Problems

Diet can be one factor affecting behaviour and the ability to learn.  It is important to establish the underlying cause of behavioural & learning problems, and in many cases simple modifications to diet, taking supplementation and or flower essences can have dramatic results. To find out more about flower essences follow this link. TO FLOWER ESSENCES.

Dietary Advice

The consumption of refined carbohydrates should be minimised, added sugar should be avoided as a regular part of the diet, particularly when it is unaccompanied by protein or dietary fibre. The child should also be checked for anaemia (as iron deficiency is quite common) and if so, iron-containing foods should be consumed or supplementation should considered. It is very important to treat any anaemia as an iron-deficient child is more likely to absorb lead, which in itself can produce difficulties. Ensure there are sufficient calcium and magnesium-containing foods in the diet as these are natural tranquillisers and a deficiency may cause behaviour and learning problems. Other deficiencies to be aware of are zinc, thiamine, and vitamin B6, and essential fatty acids. Make every effort to minimise aluminium toxicity, this can be found in aluminium cooking pots, deodorants, bleached floors & bathrooms and from high levels in drinking water. High aluminium levels can lead to hyperactivity and or behavioural problems. Some children are sensitive to particular foods, the most common being wheat, dairy foods, citrus fruits, eggs, chocolate, foods containing natural salicylates, preservatives and colourings. The 'culprit' foods should be identified wherever possible and eliminated from the diet. An exclusion diet may be needed to identify these problems.

Breastfeeding Problems

The most common problem seen in breast-feeding is insufficient milk the most common cause is not feeding often enough or for long enough. Poor nutrient levels may also contribute to poor milk supply and poor milk quality. Several dietary measures can be recommended and may be of assistance. Adjusting the diet may also help blocked ducts and infant colic.

Dietary Advice

To make more milk, the basic healthy breast-feeding diet should be followed and `empty calories' should be avoided. A light snack should be eaten before or after each feed and the calorie intake should be spread throughout the day. Herbal teas such as fenugreek can be of assistance but should always be recommended by a health care professional. For a blocked duct, less saturated fat in the diet and an increase in lecithin will assist. For colic, small, regular meals and a spread of caloric intake will help. Caffeine-containing drinks should be eliminated.

Bronchitis

Bronchitis is not an infection but an inflammation of the tissues lining air passages leading to the lungs. Chronic bronchitis can eventually lead to long term respiratory damage if not managed early. Factors that can cause or increase susceptibility to bronchitis are asthma, air pollution, cigarette smoking, fatigue and malnutrition. Food allergies can also be a contributing factor.

Symptoms of bronchitis are a slight fever, back and muscle pain, sore throat, and difficulty breathing. A dry cough is followed by the coughing up of mucus as the inflammation becomes more severe. Ribs have known to have been broken from the coughing associated with this problem. Passive smoking makes recovery from bronchitis virtually impossible because the irritant will not allow the passages to clear. This factor is particularly important in children as small lungs are not yet mature and are especially susceptible to contracting bronchitis from inhaling the smoke around them.

Colds & Flu

The common cold is a general inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory passages and is caused by a variety of viruses. Colds are considered to be highly contagious. On average Australians contract three colds per year. Poor nutrition results in a poorly functioning immune system and is one of the most prevalent causes of colds.

Dietary Advice

Prevention of colds includes adequate sleep and a well-balanced diet, this supports the immune system. A low-fat, high-fibre diet full of a variety of whole foods is recommended. Treatment includes adequate fluids including filtered water and juices, this helps treat dehydration that occur with fever, mucus production and evaporation from breathing through the mouth.

Herbal remedies, vitamin C, zinc and vitamin A all show clinical evidence in reducing the severity and duration of colds and flu.

Constipation

Constipation is a disorder characterised by the decreased frequency of bowel movements, this results in waste matter remaining in the colon and becoming dry and difficult to expel. Constipation may be caused from a variety of problems. A poor diet lacking in fluids or roughage can bring about constipation. Insufficient muscle tone in the intestinal or abdominal wall due to a lack of exercise, repeated failure to heed the signal to eliminate, excessive fatigue, nervousness, anxiety, stress or excitement may also result in constipation. Children may become constipated because of too much milk consumed. It is important that the bowel moves at least three times per week as toxins will accumulate and can cause problems.

Eczema

ECZEMA is an inflammatory & usually recurring, skin reaction. It is caused by contact with an irritating agent that is ingested or found in the environment and may appear in many different forms. Continued exposure to these could result in the spreading and the continued deterioration of affected areas. Eczema may be caused by or associated with allergic tendencies and may be aggravated by emotional stress or fatigue.

As parents of children suffering from conditions such as eczema, we tend to suffer as much as our children, with continual stress and worry of feeling helpless in the situation. Taking Flower essences for parents can be a great way to help cope and give you a stronger feeling of being in control and staying focused with treatment regimes. Eliviating allergies and eczema can often be a long process and it can be difficult to remain strong and focused with dietary eliminations.  To order Flower Essences please visit the ONLINE SHOP.

Dietary Advice

If the irritating agent is a food item, then an elimination diet should be used to identify the irritant. Certain dairy products, processed foods, and gluten found in grains may be potential irritants. Nutrients may be of help to assist any dietary deficiencies.

Deficiencies of any of the B vitamins can aggravate eczema, and should be present in the diet in adequate amounts.

Vitamin C and the bioflavonoids will help to relieve skin inflammation. Vitamin A is also essential for maintaining healthy skin tissue, while a protein deficiency has been linked to chronic eczema conditions.

Reflux

Reflux often occurs when the stomach is too full, swallowing excess air, or consuming wind-producing foods or liquids. Younger babies are more likely to suffer from reflux as the valves allowing food into the stomach are often not fully developed until late childhood. Constipation can also be a cause of reflux as the valve at the lower end of the digestive tract may be weakened by continual straining.

Dietary Advice

Herbal teas may assist food assimilation and aid in strengthening the stomach’s valves. Avoid over feeding and sudden posture changes immediately following food consumption. In older children food should be eaten slowly and chewed well to prepare the food for further digestion. The diet should be altered to prevent or treat constipation and weight should be reduced if necessary.
